Fashion Friday: Who wants to be a mermaid?

Everyone has a style icon. Whether you are aware of it or not, there is at least one person who influences your style (or lack thereof) decisions. I have had several, and most of them have hailed from the 1940s-1950s. Audrey Hepburn, Billie Holiday. All the Hitchcock ladies. But when summer hits my corner of Northern Florida, I am tempted to throw style to the wind in favor of comfort. There comes a point in the thermostat when I don’t want to look at anything with sleeves, I want to live in my swimsuit and have something cold in my hand at all times.

Enter Esther Williams, American competitive swimmer and screen actress, FBP collaborator and real-live mermaid!

What I love about Williams’ swim style is that it is cool and comfortable, but still glamorous and put-together. You can feel great playing on the beach or lying by the pool. Plus, this style looks good on everyone- young, old, thin, curvy.

I’ve put together some of Esther Williams’ classic looks and included where to find some modern-day twists.

I’m convinced that this is the most flattering swimsuit ever. This SeaFolly swimsuit at Anthropologie also comes in black, polka dots, and striped. The fit is fabulous, and the quality is top notch (I have the red from a few seasons ago and it’s still my fave).

The lines and angles of this modern one piece are oh so classy.

Here are two striped options. The two piece from the Esther Williams collection comes in several different colors and styles, including a very cute black with cherries on top pattern. This striped one piece would look great with a big straw hat!

Though polka dots are timeless, there is something about them that always makes me feel a little retro. This Mossimo suit from Target comes in a variety of colors, and is mix and match. So if you aren’t a fan of the underwire top, there is also a twisted bandeau style! Or, you could buy a top or bottom to go with one you already have at home (guilty!).

I love the structure of these suits. The underwire in the balconette top gives this two piece a vintage-feel. And the embellishment on this one piece is so pretty!

Not a swimsuit, I know, but I couldn’t leave you hanging without any ideas as to what to wear over your suit… This style short looks great paired with a button down and flats, or thrown over your swimsuit with sandals. Perfect for heading to lunch after to beach or if you need to make a quick drink run during your pool party.

These black crocheted and blush high rise from Express are pretty versatile

So, whether your under the sea or in the part of your world by the pool, you are now Esther Williams/mermaid ready this summer! Don’t forget the red lipstick.

What do you look for in swimwear? Which look is your favorite?
